To receive SNAP benefits (formerly food stamps), you must apply in person at an intake office operated by the Illinois Department of Human Services. There are two offices that serve the 12th District, according to your zip code: 2112 West Lawrence (60613, 60640): 773-907-4100 Emergency Food: Helps supplement the diets of low-income people by providing food at no cost. Greater Chicago Food Depository: The Greater Chicago Food Depository, Chicago’s food bank, is a nonprofit food distribution and training center providing food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community. The Food Depository distributes donated and purchased food through a network of 650 pantries, soup kitchens and shelters to 678,000 adults and children in Cook County every year. Use their online search tool to find the pantry or agency nearest to you. Homeless Youth Services: Meets the immediate survival needs (food, clothing, and shelter) of youth and assist them in becoming self-sufficient. Link Card: Anyone approved to receive cash assistance or SNAP benefits (food stamps) will be issued an Illinois Link card. The Illinois Link card is a plastic card that looks and works like a debit card. If you are eligible for cash and SNAP benefits, you will access both with the same card. Only one Illinois Link Card is issued per case. The Department of Human Services also lists the state’s farmers’ markets that currently accept Link, including Green City Market in Lincoln Park and the Uptown Farmers’ Market. SNAP (food stamps): Helps low-income households buy the food they need for a nutritionally adequate diet. Women, Infants, and Children (WIC): A food assistance program to help pregnant women, new mothers, and young children eat well and stay healthy. WIC Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program (FMNP): A food assistance program for women, infants, and children. Can provide special checks to buy fresh, nutritious fruits, vegetables, and herbs from farmers’ markets and roadside stands. |
