If you are fortunate to live in East Lakeview, your child has guaranteed admission to The Nettelhorst School-a CPS Cluster Magnet School, International Fine and Performing Arts Program site, and now, one of the first CPS Community Schools in Chicago. People who walk into The Nettelhorst School know that Nettelhorst is a special place to learn. Nettelhorst has a warm, welcoming environment for a diverse group of children and adults. Since 1892, Nettelhorst has been one of the finest public elementary schools in the city. The Nettelhorst School will continue to offer exciting educational opportunities for all community members who walk through our doors.
Our entire staff is dedicated to reach each student based on their own individual learning style. Our teachers are constantly analyzing the latest research on effective instruction with the goal of providing the best educational environment in the Chicago area. We have developed strong connections with the University of Chicago, Northwestern, Loyola, DePaul, and the Erickson Institute. Many of these universities rely on our faculty to provide training for their student teachers. In return, they provide our teachers with valuable resources for enhancing instruction. Our entire staff has the belief that all children are capable of attaining high academic achievement in the creative and stimulating environment created at Nettelhorst. Our Fine and Performing Arts teachers are certified and specially endorsed in their chosen fields. These teachers lead the staff in integrating fine arts into other content areas such as language arts, social studies, science, and math. In addition, our teachers recognize the need for strong parent partnerships and encourage parents to be active advocates for their children. Parents are present in classrooms, assisting the educational process taking place in classrooms each day. You will always be welcome in our classrooms.
Enrichment opportunities include the very best Chicago has to offer. Through Jane’s Place at Nettelhorst, our in-house Community Center, we provide a dynamic atmosphere for your child to develop creativity, expression, discipline and self-confidence. Our parents have come to appreciate the fine opportunities available each day after school. Our children are happy, safe, and continue the learning process long after regular school hours are over. Jane’s Place boasts a three-floor art center and JCC AfterSchool, with classes taught by the Emerald City Theatre, Mad Science, Chess Wizards, Spanish Fantastico, H.M.D. Academy of Tae Kwon Do, the Lakeview Athletic Club, Lill Street, Hoops the Gym, and many more.
If your child attends Nettelhorst, you are automatically a member of the Nettelhorst Community Group which has had great success in helping The Nettelhorst School earn the distinction of being named a “Rising Star” among schools in Chicago. If you have a desire to help, NCG (Nettelhorst Community Group) will always be there to help you become an active member of the Nettelhorst community. We welcome you with open arms to join us in helping our school community excel in everything we do. NCG values commitment, hard work, and developing lasting friendships that will propel Nettelhorst to the next level. This volunteer organization along with teachers, administrators, the Local School Council, merchants, and local politicians have led Nettelhorst to earn an Academic Improvement Award from the State of Illinois for exemplary gains in performance on the Illinois Learning Standards. The only thing that is missing is your family!
