My office serves as a drop-off center for Cell Phones for Soldiers, a non-profit organization that recycles used cell phones and uses the money to buy pre-paid calling cards for military personnel serving overseas. For every $5 donation or every mobile device valued at $5, the organization is able to provide a service member with 2.5 hours of free talk time.
As thousands of men and women continue to volunteer their time away from their lives and loved ones, the least we can do is help them stay in touch with home. Being able to chat to a friend or family member for just a few minutes can be a huge morale boost that most of us take for granted.
Residents wishing to donate a used cell phone can bring the phone to any event hosted by my office or to my constituent services office located at 1051 West Belmont during normal business hours. Batteries, chargers and phone accessories are accepted but not required.
